image

Tomorrow is the first day of Winter yet we sat outside to enjoy simple lunch. Just home made bread, with sheppard cheese and olive oil, watered in red wine from September harvest. All of them locally sourced either directly or through friends. Precious things in life come for free. For the others, you can book with us.
P.S. the dish is also a gift handcrafted by our talented friend Simona Farina at http://www.saimonart.it

Sunday veggie

The onsite sales of organic vegetables is continuing at Capo Santa Croce until next weekend. How does it work? Easy: you come by car, make our order on the way to the beach, get your sun tan top up and when you come to pick up your car you find your veggie box and the bill.
So why still parking elsewhere and pay for nothing? Every little helps! Cheers

Honey of the season, read carefully

image

Dear friends, the zagara honey we usually collect is ready for consumptions as display. However every season tasta and concistency varies according to blossoning. This year I am sad to report the zagara blossom has been affected by climate changes. As a consequence, although it is tasty honey from happy bees resting at our premises, the colour is dark as there has been a higher percentage of contaminationg from other spring blossoms. At current stage I have still to decide if discontinuing the honey online sell for one year, pending normalization of climate.
Guests at our premises will not be affected and will still be welcomed with season honey at their breakfast. The possible disruption in online sale is due to labelling restriction and not to quality and nutritions. Our bees are happy,  thanks for yoyr concern anyway 🙂

Fruit of the month

New guests have arrived and this is how they are treated, with the permaculture fruits of the month, figs and grapes from Sea garden downstairs. Fig trees and grapes have always enjoyed the sea breeze,  sleeping during the winter they stay protected from harsh salty wind at rainstorms, and dress up in green leaves i  Spring carring tasty fruits in Summer. They provide shade and fruits free of charges and ask no watering. A big thank you to Mother Nature and a warm welcome to the just arrived guests of Primo Passo Sea Garden!

Getting around – part 1 the Greek Theatre in Syracuse

When we say that Sicily is not just Sunshine, hot weather and beach, what do we actually mean? Here is an example for future reference. So far I have been to 2 great events at the Greek theatre of Syracuse: the Greek tragedies arranged with original costumes and masks by INDA and AIDA opera arranged by the Festival Euro Mediterraneo that repeat with different performances every year, respectively in May June and in July August

Ten lessons learnt from NYC SFF

Returning from New York Summer fancy food fair with few thoughts to share:
1) $10 dollar for breakfast regardless you eat cappuccino&muffin or mashed eggs with mushrooms and pepper with coffe and water as much as you can drink is soooo american!
2) despite two generations have passed since Italians emigrated to the Big Apple, Italian food quality available to New Yorkers is still lagging behind to our standars. Hard to find any farming Company on the shelves of the upmarket Italian groceries. It seems the market is firmly in the hands of the industrial processing players.
3) made in Italy is still a ‘must have’ when we talk about food serving restorants bars and hotels; supposed you open a restaurant in L.A. wouldn’t you place an italian bottle of olive oil on the table?
4) Euro is too strong versus most currencies yet most Europeans have not enough savings to take advantage. It is nice to go shopping on the Fifth avenue, IF you have money on your Euro pocket! On the contrary whether our products will make it through the US market despite the adverse currency exchange rate, time will tell.
5) Italian accent in New York is regarded as cute!!! So no point listening or pretending to speak as Obama, save on that language class fees you are paying
6) More and more US people have either no interest nor time to cook at home hence the market is diverging into either the mass market for cheap ready to eat meals at your convinient discount store or the fancy restaurants downtown that claim in different forms to offer you the ‘real’ italian food.
7) unfortunately most chefs in those restaurants or bars adapted to the American tastes. Guys, there is no spaghetti with meatball in Italy, we ignore what Alfredo sauce is and we do not dress like the guys on the label of your favourite tomato sause. Why is it so hard to cook as your mother in Italy used to?
8) it is easier to socialise, simphatise and kick off a business conversation out of Italy. First there is no need of ‘sponsorship’ and second people don’t talk of politics, women and soccer all the time as Italians do to pretend to raise interest on the other party. Boring!
9)  food journalists are more interested in life experiences than food. You can tell them that your honey is special because is made by ants and they will probably believe it if you made it up out of a nice fairy tale.
10) despite the metrosexual life at the city that never sleeps, it is nice to wake up at dawn with the lighthouse still blinking its eye, the sea breeze and the barking of your dog. See picture below!
